REFLECTION
EXPERIENCE
My experience with this module has been a strange one; I grew to appreciate and love typography all the more since our previous semester. Despite the fact that it was more challenging and urged us to think creatively on our own, I think I've grown a bit more as a designer and I feel like I wouldn't have been able to do that without this module. Although, I was rather dreading how different this module was going to be, I felt like the lack of constraints and limitations for each project helped me think a lot more creatively for each project. I was more interested in each one and I was able to find a niche that I was interested in for the final. Having to research more for our presentations helped me understand these concepts better. I'm also grateful for my lecturers' guidance and that they were able to understand my work and my goal better to help improve it. Their input gave me a different perspective and made me realise that there was more to the concept than I had expected. In the end, this class has been a constant reminder of the qualities I have to develop as a graphic designer and what to expect for the next two years.
OBSERVATION
I felt that when suddenly when being forced to combine image and text; in my project and the exercise, I struggled quite a bit and couldn't find a solid concept behind my work and the outcome appeared to fall flat. I think if I had a chance to redo that I would and also to try to understand exactly where I'm falling short. However, I was able to apply my research to my work better this semester compared to before and one such example was with the typographic systems exercise, which I ended up enjoying a lot more than I realised. I was able to cary forth the knowledge about composition and layout from the exercise and think of more ways to apply it my other projects too. I feel happier with how this semester folded out and I could see a progression of some kind in my work. However, I feel I should tried out different things and taken more risks to be more experimental.
FINDINGS
Over the course of my final project, I found myself appreciating font designers and typographers all the more after I realised how undermined their efforts are and how much thought they put into their work when trying to capture the true feel or nature of something. I was also able to understand a lot more about India's own position in graphic design and its (lack of) a design identity. Finding Indian graphic designers and seeing their work made me more inspired and I felt satisfied at having gone through with an idea that I felt was silly. I'm also glad I was able to learn more about creating collateral and the whole process behind it as this is something essential to graphic design in the next two years. In short, I'm incredibly grateful for this experience and how much I've progressed since the previous semester, which I couldn't have done without my lecturers and their patience.
